Perseguir una definición de la novela corta a la luz de los problemas que suscitan tanto su heterogeneidad como la falta de estudio de un buen número de obras, equivale a “tropezar aquí y allá con criterios tempranos —basados casi siempre en Cervantes”. La retórica de muchas colecciones se aleja del magisterio del autor del Quijote para aproximarse al de Góngora. Un triunfo culto que no responde al capricho de un solo autor ni de una moda arbitraria, sino que se trata más bien de un hecho vital e inevitable; de una atmósfera a la cual era imposible sustraerse. Los narradores nos brindan un relección de los versos de cordobés desde cinco perspectivas: 1) el auge del conceptismo («Las dos hermanas»); 2) la novelización de varios pasajes del «Polifemo» («La ingratitud hasta la muerte»; «La prodigiosa»); 3) la imitación sintáctica y figurativa de las «Soledades» («Del celoso desengañado»); 4) la parodia de Góngora y sus epígonos («El culto graduado»); 5) el barroquismo en la prosa entre 1640 y 1663 («El monstruo de Manzanares»).
